“Capital” Punishment c.25
Capital Punishment is based on a historic photograph of Haitian revolutionary leader Charlemagne Péralte after his assassination in 1919.
The title plays on two meanings of the word “capital”: punishment by death and the concept of economic value. The original photograph was meant to discourage resistance, but over time many people have seen something entirely different in it. Some view Péralte as peaceful, others as heroic or even saint-like.
This work reflects on how the meaning of an image can change over time, often in ways its creators never intended.
